Sommaren 1973 reste sex kvinnor och fem män med en flotte över Atlanten i ett av världshistoriens märkligaste vetenskapsexperiment. Syftet var att studera våld och konflikter men expeditionen blev snabbt omskriven i världspressen som ”sexflotten”. Kapten ombord var svenska Maria Björnstam. Fyrtio år senare återförenas hon med delar av besättningen på en kopia av den ursprungliga flotten för att tillsammans ta reda på vad som egentligen hände under den tre månader långa och livsfarliga resan. De personliga berättelserna och ett unikt arkivmaterial målar upp en oväntad historia om ett experiment där försökskaninerna till slut vände sig mot sin forskare.

The life-size replica of the Acali raft used for the documentary film The Raft was exhibited as an interactive art installation at Centre Pompidou in Paris. This is a photo from the installation of the raft in january 2017. Visitors are invited to come aboard the installation which contains both video and sound work made by director Marcus Lindeen. The exhibition has also been presented at Charlottenborg Kunsthal in Copenhagen in 2018.
